Let this be a lesson to those with an instrument rating, or those training for their rating. An ATR-72 was lost due to CFIT (Controlled Flight Into Terrain) when the Captain made the conscious decision to descend below prescribed weather minima on a VOR approach. I can't stress enough for instrument-rated pilots to abide by the rules. They are there for your benefit, and are not optional (except in a declared emergency). The real tragedy here is that this "accident" was 100% preventable, had the Captain followed proper procedure. What would you do? Discuss.
