Low-level engine out. What to do?

Luckily, this guy survived the crash. However, I saw several things that should've been handled better. The initial field approach looked good, but he panicked when he saw the approaching tree line, causing him to pull back on the stick, causing him to stall 30-40 feet above the ground.
